The History of Scottish Tourism

Queen Victoria & Balmoral

Queen Victoria first visited Scotland in 1842 and, like many others, she developed her overall impression of Scotland through popular art and literature of the time. Her attachment to the country grew stronger with sequential visits and soon led Queen Victoria and Prince Albert to selecting their summer retreat at Balmoral.

The country greatly benefited from this Royal recognition and instantaneously experienced an influx of eager tourists. The upper class began to mimic the Queen's choice of travel destination and was soon followed by other classes who aspired to emulate upper class lifestyle choices.
